QEH Receives $100,000 Donation to Support Future of Critical Care Nursing

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) has received a significant investment in the future of patient care following a $100,000 donation from the Olga Worrell Memorial Scholarship Trust to support postgraduate education in critical care nursing.

The inaugural contribution will help fund advanced training for registered nurses, strengthening the Hospital’s capacity to provide specialised care for critically ill patients while supporting the continued professional development of its nursing workforce.

Director of Nursing Services, Mr. Henderson Pinder, described the donation as a meaningful investment in both nursing excellence and the quality of care delivered at the Hospital.

We are gathered here to celebrate a historical partnership that has the potential to fundamentally change the trajectory of nursing and critical care at the hospital.

Mr. Pinder said the scholarship represents more than financial assistance, describing it as an investment in the future of healthcare, professional excellence and patient care. He noted that as the demand for specialised critical care services continues to grow, the Hospital must continue to develop nurses with the advanced knowledge and skills needed to care for increasingly complex patients.

Accepting the donation on behalf of the Hospital, Chief Executive Officer Neil Clark thanked the Trust for fulfilling the wishes of the late Olga Worrell, whose nursing career began at the former General Hospital before continuing in the United Kingdom and Canada.

This is more than a financial donation. It represents a direct investment in the future of nursing and patient care here at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Mr. Clark said Mrs. Worrell had expressed the wish that proceeds from her Barbados estate be used to educate nurses, ensuring her commitment to the profession would continue through future generations of healthcare professionals.

The initial endowment is expected to support two additional cohorts of registered nurses pursuing postgraduate studies in critical care through the University of Birmingham. The specialised training will further strengthen the Hospital’s critical care services by equipping nurses with advanced clinical expertise that directly benefits patient care.
