Internal Medicine is the medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis, management and nonsurgical treatment of diseases. Doctors working in this area are often called internal medicine physicians.

Because their patients are often seriously ill or require complex investigations, internal medicine physicians do much of their work in hospitals.

Most internal medicine physicians are also sub-specialists: that is, they will often have a specialist interest in one organ system or one particular area of medical knowledge. They will have received lengthy clinical and scientific training in their areas of interest, and have special expertise in the use of drugs or other medical therapies (as opposed to surgery).

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital is home to the following internal medicine subspecialties:

  • Pulmonology
  • Nephrology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Intensive Care Specialists
  • Rheumatology
  • Dermatology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Diabetology
  • Hypertension
  • Pharmacology
  • Endocrinology
  • Neurology
