QEH Reaffirms Commitment to Staff Safety Following Incident Involving Nurse
Bridgetown, Barbados – October 29, 2026: The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) is reaffirming its commitment to the safety, security and well-being of its healthcare professionals following an unfortunate incident on Wednesday evening, October 28, 2026, involving a member of its nursing team.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:00 p.m. when a male nurse, while attending to a patient, was reportedly physically assaulted by another patient who is living with Alzheimer’s disease.
QEH Management acknowledges the seriousness of the incident and the concerns it has understandably raised among staff. Discussions were held with nursing personnel reporting for duty this morning, during which management reiterated the hospital’s zero-tolerance approach to violence against healthcare workers and its commitment to providing a safe working environment.
Chief Executive Officer Neil Clark confirmed that the hospital took immediate steps to strengthen its security posture following the incident, as part of its efforts to provide additional reassurance and protection for staff and patients.
While the hospital recognises that caring for patients with certain medical and cognitive conditions can sometimes present unpredictable behavioural challenges, this does not diminish the importance of protecting healthcare professionals as they carry out their duties.
Management wishes to reassure staff and the public that the safety of its healthcare teams remains a priority. The hospital will continue to review its security arrangements, operational procedures and other appropriate measures to minimise risks while ensuring that patients, including those with complex medical needs, receive compassionate and appropriate care.
The QEH is particularly concerned about the well-being of the nurse involved and is committed to ensuring that he receives the necessary support. Management will also continue engaging with the wider nursing team to address concerns arising from the incident.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing, and any further action will be guided by the findings.
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital thanks its nursing professionals and all healthcare workers for their dedication, professionalism and continued commitment to patient care, often under challenging circumstances.
