Update On Breast Cancer Detection Programme at the QEH
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital wishes to clarify recent reports circulating on social media and WhatsApp concerning breast cancer detection equipment valued at half-a-million dollars.
This equipment was not donated directly to the QEH. Instead, the funding was placed in a trust by the family of a late patient who expressed deep appreciation for the care received at our hospital. These funds were designated specifically to support the breast cancer programme.
While there were delays related to accessing the trust and completing the procurement process, we want to assure the public that this component of the programme is actively progressing. Some delays were also experienced in procuring additional consumables required for the service; these items have recently arrived, and our teams are now finalizing an implementation plan to enhance the breast cancer detection services offered.
Importantly, with the launch of the Linear Accelerator on Tuesday, the QEH has already begun treating members of the breast cancer population using advanced radiotherapy. The forthcoming installation of the additional equipment will complement these newly available services, strengthening the continuum of care for patients.
Our medical physicist and consultant surgeon attached to the programme continue to work closely to ensure the successful rollout of this service.
The QEH remains committed to improving breast cancer detection, treatment, and overall patient care, and we will continue to update the public as progress continues.
