Job Summary
Under general direction responsible for a wide range of legal, regulatory, and compliance projects and will manage the legal resources in a manner that supports the overall priorities of the hospital.
Education And Experience
- A qualified Attorney-at-law and a minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a practicing Attorney
Core Duties
- Provides leadership and ensures efficient and effective management of staff and resources in the Legal Department;
- Consults with and advises the CEO and other Executives with regard to legal implications of overall strategic direction;
- Provides ongoing legal counsel and advice to senior management, the Board of Directors on issues pertaining to governance, risk management, industrial relations, policy and advocacy;
- Reviews and provides legal advice on tender documents;
- Reviews ongoing cases and advises management accordingly;
- Liaises with relevant departments to ensure that where legal risks have been identified, appropriate courses of action have been taken;
- Provides legal protection and risk management advice to management;
- Provides and interprets legal information, conducts training and disseminates appropriate legal requirements to staff;
- Reviews and advises management on legal implications of internal policies and procedures;
- Reviews and drafts contracts, agreements and internal policies and ensures that they are in compliance with all statutory or legal requirements;
- Reviews progress of outstanding litigation and liaises with and manages external lawyers;
- Formulates compliance check-lists to be used for the purpose of ensuring that all information required is provided accordingly;
- Continuously monitors compliance with statutory obligations and advises management accordingly;
- Works collaboratively on risk management issues, including potentially compensable events, claims management and litigation management.
Knowledge And Skill Requirements
- In-depth knowledge of regulatory law
- Knowledge of the legal aspects of healthcare
- Strong leadership and managerial skills
- Excellent relationship management and communication skills necessary for interaction with the Judicial system and negotiating parties
- Demonstrate knowledge of and experience with laws dealing with contract administration, particularly contract negotiation, preparation and administration
- Demonstrate success in managing and conducting a variety of litigation matters
- Proven ability to delicately solve sensitive matters
- Ability to accurately interpret and analyse government and associated legislation and make technically sound recommendations for legal or policy review if required.
