Barbados Physical Therapy Association to Host Comprehensive Stroke Symposium

The Barbados Physical Therapy Association (BPTA) is set to host a stroke symposium aimed at educating the public on stroke prevention, management, and rehabilitation. This significant event will take place on June 14th from 9 AM to 12 PM at the NUPW Headquarters. Dr. Melissa Walcott-Pusey, the Activities Coordinator, and Dr. Stacey Boyce, the President of BPTA, are leading this initiative to address the rising incidence of strokes in Barbados and provide vital support to stroke survivors and their caregivers.

The symposium will feature a diverse range of healthcare professionals, including doctors, occupational therapists, nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, and representatives from organizations such as the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Barbados National Registry. This multidisciplinary approach ensures comprehensive coverage of stroke care from prevention to rehabilitation.

Why Focus on Strokes?

Strokes are a major health concern in Barbados, with over 700 cases reported annually. Importantly, strokes can affect individuals of any age, not just the elderly. The symposium aims to dispel myths surrounding strokes and emphasize that recovery and a return to normal life are possible with the right care and support.

How to Participate

The symposium is open to everyone, with no prior registration required. For more information, you can visit the BPTA website at www.bdospta.com, follow their Instagram page at bpta_246, or call 253-1191.

This symposium is a crucial step in addressing the growing issue of strokes in Barbados. By bringing together a wide range of experts and providing interactive, informative sessions, the BPTA aims to empower the public with the knowledge and tools needed to improve health outcomes and support stroke rehabilitation effectively.
