Our Rehabilitation Department provides a comprehensive list of rehabilitative services to hospital inpatients, as well as providing a wide range of Out-patient treatments to prevent deformity, improve mobility, optimal function, employability and independence. The provision of rehabilitation services reduces bed days in hospital and sick leave, facilitate the integration of the patient back into the mainstream of society as well as holistically enhances the individual’s future health, quality of life, total well-being and capacity to resume self-determined satisfying lives. Thus, efficient and effective rehabilitation services facilitate the empowerment of patients.

The Department has also established an amputee clinic which determines the prosthetic needs of patients with both upper and lower limb loss. The Clinic prescribes and monitors the functioning of prosthetic limbs for its patients.

The Department presently comprises 3 units housed in separate buildings :

  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Orthotics/Prosthetics Workshop

Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists, assisted by Rehabilitation Therapy Technicians, administer therapy. The Orthotic/Prosthetic Technicians create prostheses and orthopaedic appliances.

Referrals are made to the Department by clinicians working on the wards and in Out-patient departments of the QEH, as well as by Polyclinics, private medical practitioners, the Children’s Development Centre, and overseas. The therapists and physician in the department carefully assess the needs of each patient referral, prescribe and implement appropriate, patient specific, treatment programmes.
